Flushing Cemetery Walking Tour

Local historian James Driscoll and horticultural specialists Fred Gerber and Chuck Wade lead an informative tour highlighting key figures and features of this park-like burial ground. Established in 1853, the cemetery is a testament to Flushing’s arboreal and horticultural heritage. As Flushing was a center for horticultural nurseries through the 19th century, the grounds offer a notable array of spring-flowering trees and shrubbery. The walking tour is co-sponsored with The Voelker Orth Museum. The tour group meets at 1:45 near the door to the Flushing Cemetery Chapel, inside the main gate.

Flushing Cemetery is a picturesque non-sectarian cemetery on over 75 countryside acres. The Cemetery was first established on the 20 acre farmland of John Purchase, when Queens’ population was 20,000 and expanded in 1875. It is the final resting place of many Bayside Quaker families and such notables as Louis Armstrong, Bernard Baruch, Dr. Adam Clayton Powell, Sr., Vincent Sardi Sr., and Dizzy Gillespie. The Voelker-Orth family who endowed the museum in Flushing are also buried in Flushing Cemetery.
